A New Solution for Acne Scars

Acne is the most common skin disorder in the U.S. Although most acne resolves over time, many men and women are left with lifelong reminders of their struggle in the form of acne scars.

The past few years have brought us several new treatments to diminish the scarring that results after acne. These scars are typically seen as permanent blemishes and indentations, most commonly on the cheeks, jawline, and temples. Over time, as the skin ages, these scars can become even more obvious.

Now there are two new safe and effective ways we can decrease the appearance of these scars:

  1. Re-texture the scars and diminish the discoloration with lasers
  2. Fill deep scars with a long-term dermal filler.

The new generation of high-powered lasers can penetrate deep into the skin to remove scar fibers, and stimulate the skin to regenerate softer, more supple normal collagen. This can help restore natural texture and color, smooth out the edges of acne scars, and sometimes help fill the acne scars.

Bellafill™ is a new filler approved by the FDA to specifically fill deep acne scars to reduce their appearance. It is a collagen-based dermal filler with polymethylmethacrylate spheres that is easily injected under acne scars during a quick office visit. In one or two visits, this simple procedure can lift depressed acne scars to smooth and level the appearance. Unlike other short-term fillers on the market, Bellafill provides long-term correction with little or no down-time.

Because acne scars can present in different shapes, depths, and locations, your doctor will discuss with you which treatment is most effective for you during a detailed consultation.
